What Makes a Retreat Truly Memorable?
Most people assume it’s the lake, the cabins, the food, or the activities.
After hosting schools, churches, and private organizations for more than two decades, we’ve come to a clear conclusion: the environment determines the quality of a distraction-free group retreat in Florida.
That’s why our mission at Orange Springs Retreat Center is simple:
To create a truly exclusive, distraction-free environment where schools, churches, and private groups can safely and effectively experience their most meaningful retreat.
We just happen to have an exceptional 100+ acre lakefront property with comfortable accommodations, chef-prepared meals, and outstanding amenities that support that mission.
We believe the success of a retreat is determined less by the facilities themselves and more by how intentionally those facilities remove distractions, encourage meaningful connection, and allow groups to focus on what brought them together in the first place.
Why Exclusivity Changes the Retreat Experience
At Orange Springs Retreat Center, “exclusive use” isn’t just a booking policy—it’s the foundation of the retreat experience.
When your group has an entire property to yourselves, everything changes.
- One group at a time, always. Your retreat isn’t sharing the property with strangers, corporate events, or other youth groups.
- You control the schedule. Whether it’s early morning worship, leadership sessions, afternoon recreation, or late-night conversations around the campfire, your retreat unfolds according to your group’s goals—not someone else’s schedule.
- Privacy and peace of mind. Our private, gated property bordering the Ocala National Forest provides a secure environment where school leaders, pastors, and retreat organizers can focus on their group instead of outside distractions.
- Space for deeper connection. Without competing activities or unfamiliar guests, conversations continue naturally, relationships strengthen, and meaningful moments happen more often.
This is the environment we intentionally create so your group can accomplish what it came to do.
The Amenities Support the Mission
People often compliment our chef-prepared meals, comfortable climate-controlled cabins, beautiful spring-fed lake, white-sand beach, and wide variety of recreational activities.
We’re incredibly proud of those amenities.
But we don’t believe they’re what make a retreat successful.
They exist to remove friction and create opportunities for connection.
A shared meal becomes another opportunity for meaningful conversation.
A comfortable night’s sleep helps everyone stay engaged throughout the weekend.
Time on the lake creates laughter, trust, and memories that continue long after the retreat ends.
Private meeting spaces allow honest discussions without interruptions.
Our facilities don’t define your retreat. They enable the retreat your group came to create.
More Than Two Decades of Learning
This property has welcomed groups since 1971, when Shelley and David “Big D” Sokol, founded Camp Shalom.
In 2002, I reimagined the property as Orange Springs Retreat Center—a year-round, exclusive-use retreat venue designed specifically for schools, churches, youth organizations, and private groups.
Over the past two decades, we’ve hosted countless guests.
Looking back, one lesson has become increasingly clear.
The groups that experienced the most meaningful weekends weren’t necessarily the ones with the busiest schedules.
They were the ones with the fewest distractions.
That realization continues to shape every decision we make today.
Looking Ahead to Your 2027 Retreat
As our 2026 calendar reached capacity, many returning schools, churches, and organizations began reserving their preferred dates for 2027.
Florida’s mild winter and spring seasons continue to be especially popular for retreats, offering comfortable weather, beautiful outdoor settings, and an ideal environment for focused learning, leadership development, spiritual growth, and team building.
Whether you’re planning:
- A school leadership retreat
- A church or youth ministry retreat
- A nonprofit planning retreat
- A private organization’s team-building event
our mission remains the same: to provide an environment where your group can experience its very best retreat.
Ready to Create Your Best Retreat?
Every retreat has a purpose.
Some are designed to strengthen leadership.
Some deepen faith.
Others build friendships, develop teams, or simply give people the opportunity to reconnect without the distractions of everyday life.
Whatever brings your group together, we believe your environment should help—not hinder—that mission.
That’s why Orange Springs Retreat Center exists.
