Student Leadership Retreat – Attending An Off Campus Retreat
You just completed your sophomore year at college, and you stop by to say goodbye to a couple of your favorite teachers. They have encouraged you all semester long to attend the school’s end-of-summer student leadership retreat. Orange Springs Retreat will be hosting this year’s event, where you can do just about anything under the sun. We are a retreat facility located next to a lake adjacent to the Ocala National Forest. It’s an ideal setting to connect with nature, take in some fresh air, and focus on student leadership.
While you are decompressing from your finals, you think it may benefit your future. You let them know that you’re looking forward to relaxing by the pool and you will think about it. They remind you that the deadline to register for the retreat is just a few weeks away. There are certain things student leaders will learn at a college student leadership retreat held at Orange Springs Retreat. Today, let’s talk about the importance of attending an off-campus retreat.
Acquired Leadership Traits in Retreats
The learned leadership traits include:
- Excellent communication skills
- Appropriate decision-making skills
- Organizing skills
- Action planning
- Forward strategic thinking
- Risk management skills
- Resiliency
- Diverse culture management
- Collaboration
- The essentials of emotional Intelligence
Communication and trust are two essential components that all leaders need to succeed.
The Orange Springs Retreat’s impressive high and low ropes course is something we are proud of. We also have a rock-climbing wall.
You can request the use of our ropes courses. However, we ask that you reserve the courses in advance. That way, we can arrange for some of the best facilitators around keeping you and your students safe. A student leadership retreat can help your students learn to be leaders away from their day-to-day monotony. They’ll learn to motivate, influence, and guide others toward achieving their goals. Rope courses are staples in building leaders and teams. Truthfully, there are tons of rope course leadership activities to pick from, but below are just a few. We split out the low and the high rope course activities.
Your Retreats Low-Rope Course Activities Will Include
The Mohawk Walk
With a series of foot cables zig-zagging between poles, the entire group must reach the end without hitting the ground. They cannot use any help from a rope or a stick, develop a strategy, and work together as a team. You could create a storyline that puts a little pizazz into the activity.
Nitro Crossing
Teams must traverse over an imaginary canyon while transporting resources safely. The entire team must get to the other side safely. You will be eliminated from the activity if anyone hits the ground or drops a resource. Once the whole team reaches the end, they must give a cheer or sing a song.
Swinging Log
In this activity, a log is suspended between two poles with cables. The team must balance while walking from one end of the log to the other. An opposing team member can rock the log back and forth, making it difficult to reach the other side.
Wild Woozy Bridge
This activity consists of two cables/ropes that form a “Y” between two poles. The team members must work in pairs to traverse the cables/ropes as far as they can without falling. High rope activities are not for the faint of heart but will strengthen any team member’s leadership ability.
High Rope Activities Include
Burma Loops
A series of single loops of rope hanging from up above will test a team’s endurance, body control, focus, and leg strength. Leadership is a journey, not a sprint; therefore, student leaders must be focused and in control. This high rope activity requires excellent hand-eye coordination and intestinal fortitude.
Log Walk
Similar to the low rope activity, this is a little more challenging. Traversing across a long log suspended high in the air tests one’s mentality. As you walk across the log, it is essential not to sway the log. Focusing on your balance is vital.
Climbing Wall
A student leader must be unyielding. The team must develop a strategy to identify the best route and avoid any tricky wall sections. Wall climbing teaches leaders to be tenacious, good problem solvers, fantastic communicators, and critical thinkers.Shaping the leaders of tomorrow is critical to a healthy, thriving society.
